Learning how to jump-start your Ford car may save you a phone call and potentially long wait times for roadside maintenance. Our Ford service team is here to guide you on DIY Ford service, starting with how to jump-start your vehicle.

Set the Stage

After phoning roadside assistance, a friend, or flagging down a kind stranger to give you a boost, prepare your vehicle. If you have your owner's manual nearby, look over the jump-start safety information. Remove all jewelry that could accidentally come into contact with the battery to prevent the risk of shock.

The next step is to locate your jumper cables, which we recommend storing in your trunk. Pop open the hood of both vehicles, ensuring the cars are either side by side or facing each other.

Jump-Starting Your Car

Make sure both cars are completely turned off and in Park with the parking brake on. Unplug anything in the aux port or chargers. Next, remove the battery covers.

Clamp one end of the red cable to the dead vehicle's positive battery terminal. Then, connect the other end of the red cable to the booster vehicle's positive battery terminal.

Clamp one end of the black cable to the booster vehicle's negative battery port. Connect the other end to a non-painted metal surface on the dead vehicle. Make sure nothing is obstructing the cords and start up the booster vehicle.

You’ll want to wait a couple of minutes, then you can try to start the engine. Leave both vehicles connected and allow them to run for about three minutes. Once your car starts, disconnect the cables in the opposite order you placed them and allow the affected vehicle to continue running until you get to where you need to go.

If your car continues to break down, you may need a new battery. Contact the service center at Helfman Ford with any of your battery inquiries. We are here to help!
